Involvement in Political Movements

Joining Ginbot Sebat Movement

In the wake of the contentious 1997 EC (2005) elections, Zemene Kassie left his homeland for Eritrea. Here, he joined hands with the Ginbot Sebat movement, an insurgent group that was engaging in an aggressive and comprehensive struggle against the Ethiopian government. Zemene brought his unwavering spirit of resistance to the movement, committed to the cause of justice and political change.

While the challenges were great, his dedication and courage saw him contributing significantly to the movement’s efforts toward government accountability and social reform. Nevertheless, this chapter of political activism was but one part of Zemene’s growing involvement in the political sphere.

International Travels and Return to Ethiopia

Upon his involvement with the Ginbot Sebat movement, Zemene embarked on trips to various countries globally, a journey evoked by his commitment to the movement’s cause. The nature of his international travels was primarily strategic, seeking global empathy and support for the struggle Ginbot Sebat was waging against the Ethiopian government.

Advisory Position in Community Security Office

In his home country, after an administrative change that saw opposition figures appointed into official positions, Zemene was singled out due to his extensive experience and assigned an advisory role in the Amhara Region’s Community Security Office. This position put him at the helm of strategizing for the regional community’s security and tackling any pressing issues that directly affected the region’s stability. However, Zemene’s venture into administrative duty was short-lived due to the chaotic events that unfolded on June 22, 2019 (Sene 15/2011 EC). The unsettling circumstances, arising from the assassinations of regional officials, pushed him to step down from his position.

Resignation and Return to Politics

Zemene, undeterred by the turmoil, swiftly declared his innocence in the killings of key regional leaders. Following these events, he pivoted his focus back towards the political realm, precisely at the climax of the northern war’s expansion to the country’s center. One notable area of operation was Western Wollo, where they fought side by side with the national defense force.

Their cooperation with the national force was necessary and strategically beneficial as the defense of their region was at stake. Their courage and tenacity became a beacon of resistance amidst the havoc of war.
