Abiy Ahmed’s Role in Ethiopia’s Political Crisis

Background of the Political Crisis

Historical Context

Ethiopia’s political landscape has been shaped by turbulent waves of revolutionary and countercurrent mobilizations. The fabric of Ethiopia’s socio-political entity saw radical alterations with the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie I during the 1974 Derg Revolution. The military junta that subsequently seized power hinged onto a brutally authoritarian rule till 1991, only getting deposed by the concerted efforts of rebel groups.

Enter the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the confederation of rebel groups that ousted the military junta. The EPRDF, though representative of Ethiopia’s multicultural lineage, was dominated by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), deriving significant political backing from the Tigray minority ethnic group. In March 2018, Abiy Ahmed, a member of the Oromo ethnicity, assumed the seat of power.

Current Political Climate

Abiy Ahmed’s ascension to power was seen as a beacon of hope for Ethiopia’s marginalized ethnic communities with expectations of a turn towards democratic liberation and unity. However, the ongoing crisis, marred by violence and human rights abuses, signifies a sharp contrast to these pacifistic aspirations. Deemed the worst political turbulence since the end of the Derg era, thousands have perished with hundreds of thousands displaced on account of emerging ethnic conflicts across the Oromia, Amhara, and Tigray regions.

Abiy Ahmed’s Leadership Style

Policies and Decisions

Abiy Ahmed’s reign began with an unveiling of reforms including releasing political prisoners, welcoming back exiled dissidents, and implementing economic agendas leaning towards privatization. However, mounting ethnic tension and discord could not be curbed, magnified by the perceived marginalization of opposing political groups and security forces’ indiscriminate use of force. Critics argue that, with the delay of the 2020 elections citing COVID-19, Abiy consolidated his grip on power, thus drifting further away from the democratic ideals he originally advocated for.

Public Perception

Public sentiment towards Abiy Ahmed presents a conflicted narrative. On one hand, Abiy is hailed globally as a reformist, garnering recognition in the form of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize following the attainment of peace treaty with neighboring Eritrea. Conversely, domestically, his approval ratings have seen a decline. A significant segment perceives the Prime Minister’s administration as a failure in responding to ethnic violence, particularly concerning allegations against Ahmed regarding the harsh crackdown in the Tigray region.

Allegations of Criminal Conduct

In the alarming narrative that surrounds Abiy Ahmed’s rule, a significant part is the array of criminal allegations leveled against him. These include his purported involvement in illicit activities, a significant breach of the position he holds.

Involvement in Illicit Activities

This aspect is subdivided into two distressing categories: government corruption and human rights violations, both of which paint a bleak picture of the Prime Minister’s administration.

Government Corruption

Abiy Ahmed’s ascend to power promised hope and reform. However, allegations of widespread government corruption under his administration have led to a widespread loss of faith in his leadership. Claims of misappropriated state funds, corrupt practices within infrastructure projects, and the appointment of biased officials have been rampant. Should these allegations hold merit, it points to a dire situation of deep-seated corruption that engulfs the highest tiers of Ethiopia’s government.

Human Rights Violations

Perhaps the most concerning aspect of Ahmed’s administration is the multitude of human rights violations reportedly taking place. Accusations range from illegal detention of dissenters, severe restriction of freedom of speech, and even cases of state-sponsored violence. These claims considerably taint the image of a leader who was lauded with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize barely a few years ago.

Impact on Institutional Integrity

The repercussions of Abiy Ahmed’s alleged wrongdoings extend far beyond immediate political gain or the committing of illicit acts. The long-term impact on Ethiopia’s institutional integrity, specifically in the domains of media freedom and judicial independence, is particularly worrisome.

Media and Freedom of Speech

In a democratic society, the media serves as the fourth estate, bearing the weighty responsibility of holding those in power accountable. Sadly, media freedom and freedom of speech in Ethiopia appear to bear the brunt of the current government’s oppressive tactics. Numerous journalists and media outlets have reportedly been subjected to censorship, intimidation, and sometimes even arrests, as noted in the case of Birtukan Temesgen.

Judicial Independence

In the face of a government mired in allegations of corruption and rights abuses, an independent judiciary forms the last line of defense, representing hope for justice. Yet under Abiy Ahmed’s reign, the independence of Ethiopia’s judiciary has reportedly been compromised. Claims of court verdicts being influenced and judges being pressured into making biased decisions raise serious concerns regarding the fairness and impartiality of the judicial system.

This exposing dive into the unsettling reality surrounding Abiy Ahmed’s alleged criminal conduct in Ethiopia is only the tip of the iceberg. The detailed investigation into each allegation and its impact on Ethiopia’s political landscape requires time, unwavering dedication, and the courage to face grave realities.

The Case of Birtukan Temesgen

The tale of Birtukan Temesgen serves as an illustration of how the alleged criminal conduct by Abiy Ahmed’s regime manifests in society.

Events Leading to the Arrest

Public Disclosure and Aftermath

Birtukan Temesgen’s situation came into the limelight after being publicly disclosed by EBS TV. This revelation sent shockwaves through the whole of Ethiopia and triggered a series of distressing events. The Ethiopian Federal Police, allegedly acting under the orders of the Abiy Ahmed administration, arrested Birtukan and have been detaining her at the Addis Ababa Federal Police Office.

In the aftermath of the disclosure, employees of the EBS TV, including program director Tariku Haile, assistant editor Winia, and video editor Habtamu, were abducted, arrested and contained at the police compound. This blatant crackdown caused a significant uproar among citizen watchdogs and international human rights organizations, as it reeked of authoritarian rule and obliteration of the freedom of speech.

EBS TV’s Role

EBS TV, as an independent broadcaster, has always been on the front line in ensuring and advocating for societal justice. They played a crucial role by making Birtukan Temesgen’s abuse story public, thereby raising epidemic awareness about the reality of the plights propelled by government actions within Ethiopia. However, their interruption of regular broadcasts on all three of their Ethio Sat channels following these incidents remains a matter of great concern.

Regime’s Response and Media Silence

Government Pressure on Media Outlets

The Abiy Ahmed regime has been infamous for suppressing media houses and clamping down on dissenting opinions. The arrest of EBS TV employees can be viewed in this broader context of stifling media freedom. Information surrounding their arrest and subsequent events were shrouded in secrecy and ambiguity. These moves aim to confine the media’s voice and establish an image that aligns with the government’s narrative, thereby infringing on media independence.

Impact on EBS Television Broadcasting

The freezing of broadcast activities on EBS TV’s three channels post these egregious events raises many questions. Is it a precautionary step taken by the media house, or a government-imposed sanction? If it’s the former, it’s a testament to the pressure induced by the ruling regime. If it’s the latter, it signals a further devolution into authoritarian rule. Further investigation into this incident could shed light on Abiy Ahmed’s disturbing engagement with criminal activities, granting us a fuller understanding of his detrimental effects on Ethiopia’s socio-political landscape.

Evaluating the International Perspective

In a globalized world, the international community does not remain oblivious to the political undercurrents of a nation, especially if it involves a Nobel Peace laureate like Abiy Ahmed. Reactions from global leaders have varied from silent diplomacy to outright criticism, while Ethiopia’s future wrestles with the socio-economic consequences of these accusations.

Reactions from Global Leaders

Diplomacy and Criticism

International reactions reflect a blend of diplomacy and criticism. While some leaders adopt a cautious stance, waiting to see how the situation unfolds, others rebuke the Ethiopian leader’s actions. Diplomacy was seen at its best when the European Union, instead of rushing into sanctions, opted for intense dialogue to resolve the conflict. On the other end of the spectrum, Norway, home to the Nobel Peace Committee, has publicly questioned Ahmed’s legitimacy as a peace laureate.

Consequences for International Relations

The ongoing crisis unquestionably impacts Ethiopia’s international relations – relationships built on mutual trust suddenly hang in the balance. Countries depending on Ethiopia for regional security are now wary of their ally. Trade partners are also inevitably affected due to political instability and human rights concerns. This scenario casts an unfortunate shadow over Ethiopia’s international standing.

Implications for Ethiopia’s Future

Socio-Economic Impact

The socio-economic consequences of Ahmed’s alleged criminal involvement cannot be understated, further compounded by the political crisis. Ethiopia, like many developing countries, greatly depends on foreign aid and investment, which are now at risk. Rising tensions could potentially lead to economic downturns, affecting Ethiopia’s progress towards achieving sustainable development goals.

Pathway to Resolution

The pathway to resolution seems steep. The Ethiopian government’s commitment to address these allegations transparently and fairly is pivotal for this journey. Similarly, robust domestic and international pressure is necessary to cease any human rights violations and illicit conduct. While the journey towards justice seems tumultuous, it is not impossible if taken with resolve and integrity.

As we observe Abiy Ahmed’s saga unfold, we are reminded of the disturbing reality wherein individuals of high esteem may falter, and the importance of holding every individual accountable, irrespective of their laurels.

  1. The drama. Why now?
    The crime. Why then?
What was the aim of the Dembi Dollo abductions? What did it try to achieve or what did it achieve? Without these reflections, we would be just like fish swallowing bait.
All this drama is orchestrated by Abiy Ahmed Ali. It is clear that he is trying to have the attention of the entire nation riveted to this issue. The Oromumma gang, including Jawar Mohammed, have made it clear, through their comments, that they have inside information on why this whole drama is being played out. My take is that EBS would not be airing any documentary without getting the green light from Abiy Ahmed. All the rest is part of the drama to get the attention of the gullible masses.
I am talking about the Dembi Dollo abduction victims, not about Birtukan of EBS.
Abiy has the complete evidence regarding who the real culprits behind the Dembi Dollo abduction were. Nigusu Tilahun completed the investigation and reported all the evidence to Abiy who kept it locked in his office. Why then did he not reveal it at the time? Because he was waiting for the most opportune moment when he can maximally profit from the disclosure of the evidence.
That Abiy Ahmed has been preparing for this moment is clear from the spark he let out via his mouthpiece (Berhanu Jilo) three months ago, who out of the blue said that the kinapper was Chala aka Shiferaw Gonderew, an Amhara Dembi Dollo native working for ANM (ABIN). For Berhanu Jilo to drop that bomb a full four years after the abduction crime was committed and with out any instigation, makes you suspect that OPDO has been cooking something.
    My suspicion?
I think this crime was committed by the TPLF and Abiy held the evidence to save it for a time when he needed to cause an Amhara-Tigre rift the most. Maybe there have been some communication with some Fanno wings with TPLF to jointly topple Abiy Ahmed and this is his strategy to draw a wedge between them?
There is also another scenario, a more dangerous one. I will come back to it in a separate article on the whole topic. In the absence of an institution that is willing to reveal the truth, all we citizens can do is use our informed intelligence to connect dots and come up with plausible answers.
